Dan Saltzman is a Portland native and attended Beaverton High School. He earned a B.S. from Cornell University's School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and an M.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before starting his own small business, Environmental Management Solutions, Dan worked as an environmental engineer for CH2M Hill.
Drawn to public service early on, his political career has included a staff position with US Senator Ron Wyden in Washington DC, five years as a Multnomah County Commissioner, and his current role as a City of Portland Commissioner. Dan also served on the Portland Community College Board of Directors for ten years.
Known for his pragmatism and measured decision making, Dan has implemented some of Portland’s best structured programs. For example, the Portland Children’s Levy and the Office of Sustainable Development (now the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability) were established because of Dan’s commitment to children’s issues and long-term livability in Portland. Without his recent work to create the One Stop Domestic Violence Resource Center, many women and children would continue to struggle with unnecessary logistical obstacles when leaving their abusers. When Portland saw a spur of gang violence last year, Dan acted fast to implement Operation Cool Down and increase resources for community outreach—resulting in a decrease of gang activity. These are only a few examples of Dan’s valuable work.
Dan is a proud father to his daughter, who is now a sophomore at the University of Oregon. Like all of us, Dan attempts to lead a very normal life outside of work—reading historical fiction, watching college basketball and enjoying Portland with family and friends
